Creating Jobs, Creating Opportunity

Economic development is the lifeblood that sustains our communities. It improves our neighborhoods, provides our residents with jobs, maintains our infrastructure and creates new opportunities for the future. For these reasons, Mike has made economic development one of his top priorities in the House. You can read about all the projects that Mike has helped make a reality below.

Salisbury

Mike helped secure a $2.8 million grant for new infrastructure on Rabbit Road. Salisbury partnered with dozens of existing businesses, including many of the town’s top employers, to bring the project to fruition. The funding helped pay for water and sewer upgrades, roadway improvements and construction of a pump station near the Salisbury Industrial Park. Expansion and build out of the park is projected to create 500 new jobs.

The Salisbury Chamber of Commerce has made a commitment to promoting Salisbury Beach and the businesses of Salisbury. Mike has made a commitment to the Chamber by securing $75,000 through the state budget for brochures and advertising campaigns.

Newburyport

With Mike’s support, the state has provided $1.1 million to Anna Jaques Hospital through the Essential Community Provider Trust Fund. Anna Jaques is not only the largest employer in Newburyport but also a critical health resource for people outside of Greater Boston.

“We are grateful for the active support we received from our legislative delegation...Representative Costello went out of his way to express his belief in Anna Jaques, sent strong letters of support and made phone calls to the Secretary's office.”

President and CEO

Mike was also critical in helping obtain an oncology permit for the Newburyport Medical Center.

Mike demonstrated his commitment to economic development by providing Newburyport with $120,000 for an Economic Development Director position. With the money, the city created promotional pamphlets and a grant program targeted at attracting new businesses to the city, especially to the industrial park.

Newburyport received $450,000 in grant money to study flooding on Malcolm Hoyt Drive in the industrial park. Malcolm Hoyt Drive flooded during the 2006 Mother's Day storm and forced the city to close the road.

Amesbury

Since 2007, Mike has secured $245,000 to pay for engineering design and costs in the Lower Millyard. The project includes the construction of a transportation center, development of a condominium project, the relocation of the Department of Public Works, the expansion of the Water Street parking garage, the completion of the Amesbury Carriage Museum and the completion of the Riverwalk along the Powwow River. This final stage of the Riverwalk will connect the downtown to the mile-and-a-half-long Riverwalk path via a footbridge and boardwalk that will be built along the Powow River in the heart of the downtown.

Mike has helped to bring $1 million in state and federal funding to the Aubin Street/ Nason’s Court neighborhood for sewer, water and drainage improvements, streetscape beautification and road resurfacing. http://www.newburyportnews.com/archivesearch/local_story_225220845.html

With Mike’s support, Amesbury received a $350,000 Zoning Incentive Payment from the state’s Smart Growth Housing Trust Fund. The smart-growth plan will spark increased development for the area and could earn Amesbury an addition $1.2 million in state payments.

“The overlay district will create significant opportunities to provide affordable housing, increase the commercial tax base, and protect open space. I appreciate... Representative Costello’s efforts working with DHCD to secure Amesbury’s place in the 40R program.”
Mayor Thatcher Kezer
Amesbury

Mike worked with the Amesbury Alliance to install new signage that promotes downtown Amesbury.

“Today’s sign installation, the first of a number of signs, is a perfect example of goals accomplished through the cooperation of the state officials, the town, the Alliance and the downtown business community. Many thanks to Representative Costello and all involved.”
Raymond Shockey
Executive Director
Alliance for Amesbury
