Costello Joins Colleagues, MGH in Celebrating Child Safety Laws

Members of the Massachusetts Legislature, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the family of Sean Kearney will gather to commemorate the passage of a series of recently-enacted child safety laws aimed at protecting Massachusetts kids on recreation trails, athletic fields, and commonwealth roadways. The three laws specifically address child safety issues including concussion awareness in athletic programs, the danger of texting- and-driving, and a minimum age requirement for ATV operators.

MGH President Peter Slavin MD, David Torchiana MD, chairman of the Massachusetts General Hospital Physicians Organization, and MGH pediatric trauma surgeon Peter Masiakos MD, will join Representative Michael A. Costello, Senator Steven A. Baddour and other memebers of the Legislature to present a commemorative plaque to the Kearney family, who’s eight-year-old son Sean tragically lost his life in an ATV accident.

They will be honored for their efforts to enact “Sean’s Law,” which raises the minimum age requirement from 10 to 14 making it the strictest law of its kind nationwide.

"As a parent of young children, I am extremely proud to have played an integral part in passing these new safety laws, which will save children's lives," Costello said. "The ATV law, in particular, will prevent hundreds of accidents annually. I know it is a meaningful accomplishment for the Kearney family. Without their support and drive, we could have never made this possible."
