Making Our Communities Safer

Mike has been the House Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Safety & Homeland Security for the last three years. During that time, the Legislature has passed important laws to implement new safety measures for the public, train our first responders, and provide assistance to local communities. Mike has also taken a key role in shaping both state and national public safety policy. Mike served on the Governor’s CORI Reform Commission. He is a member of the Governor’s Anti-Crime Council. Mike also serves as the national co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Committee on Collateral Consequences and Re-Entry.

State Police patrols at Salisbury Beach: Hundreds of thousands of people visit Salisbury Beach each summer, making it an area of critical importance for the town and the state. By establishing a close working relationship with the State Police Colonel, Mike has been able to increase police presence at beach using State Troopers. These patrols make Salisbury Beach a safer, more enjoyable place for everyone to visit.

Community policing grants. These annual grants have sent $360,000 to Salisbury, $160,000 to Amesbury and $200,000 to Newburyport for police training, equipment and personnel.

Amesbury Police Station. Mike helped secure a $XX grant to help repair water damage at the Amesbury Police Station.

Salisbury Safe and Drug Free Schools. With Mike’s strong support, the Executive Office of Public Safety & Homeland Security awarded Salisbury a $XXX in 2009 to increase police presence in the schools. Because of its transient population, Salisbury schoolchildren are among the most at-risk in the state.

Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center. Mike has been among Jeanne Geiger’s strongest supporters. He was a founding member of the Gentlemen’s Partnership, which helped raise $XXX for the Crisis Center. With Mike’s support, Jeanne Geiger has raised its profile and become a state model for combating domestic violence. Mike helped secure a $XX grant for Jeanne Geiger from EOPS.

Regional Crisis Response. Mike secured a grant for the first-ever regional response exercise which took place at Newburyport High School in 2008.

The Newburyport Fire Department has received oil-spill cleanup equipment through a partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation, which obtains excess property from the federal government. Through the same program, the Salisbury Fire Department has received a fire boat.
