State Officials Showcase Local Trails

In Support of DCR Grants

NEWBURYPORT – The rail trails of Newburyport and Salisbury will be highlighted tomorrow during a tour with Paul Jahnige, Director of the Greenways and Trails Programs for the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Senator Steven A. Baddour and Representative Michael A. Costello will host Jahnige, who will tour the city and town’s trails system. Both Newburyport and Salisbury have applied for Recreational Trails Grants through the Department.

“This is a great opportunity to highlight the wonderful trails we already have, but also to highlight some of the improvements we want to make and the state can be a great partner,” said Rep. Costello. “When this project is complete, I think the Coastal Trails System can serve as a model for the entire state.”

The tour will begin in Newburyport at 11 a.m. on Washington Street behind the Winter Street Café. Baddour, Costello and Jahnige will walk to the Railroad Bridge looking at the rail trail and the Harbor Walk along the city’s waterfront.

At 12:15 p.m., the state officials will join Salisbury Selectman Jerry Kilma and other town officials at Bartlett Street (off Elm Street behind the Dairy Queen) for a tour of the trail system there.
