Salisbury Beach, The Crown Jewel of the First Essex District

Sometimes out of great challenges comes great change. Such is the story of Salisbury Beach, which was reshaped – physically and metaphorically – by the Mother’s Day Storm of 2007 and the Ice Storm of 2008.

Mike Costello has helped change the face of Salisbury Beach by fostering an unparalleled working relationship between state officials and local stakeholders. Through this partnership, numerous capital upgrades have been made at the beach. More importantly, Mike has helped to ensure that there will be resources to preserve the environmental beauty of Salisbury beach for years to come.

Capital Improvements:

New lifeguard stations
The creation of the Paul H. Sullivan Sun Shade Deck on the Salisbury Beach Boardwalk
A new handicap access ramp at Access Point 2, a collaboration with the Salisbury Beach Betterment Association
New electrical hookups for the Salisbury Beach Campground
Repaving of the Salisbury Beach parking lot
New signage to direct tourists to the beach
New boardwalks to provide public access to the water

Sustaining Salisbury Beach: Mike was instrumental in passing legislation that created the first Salisbury Beach Preservation Fund, which will provide the monetary resources to ensure that America’s Oldest Beach remains a treasure for years to come.

Sand Renourishment. Working with federal officials and the Army Corps of Engineers, Mike has helped bring X cubic yards of sand to Salisbury Beach. The much needed sand will be dredged from the Merrimack River and be deposited on the beach to help alleviate erosion issues there.

Beach Management Plan. At Mike’s urging, the state developed the first even Beach Management Plan for Salisbury Beach. All future maintenance shall include snow fencing, dune grass plantings and better management of the beach sand.
