Turning Point Receives State ContractDSS promises 10-year committmentJanuary 18, 2006BOSTON – State Representative Michael A. Costello announced that Turning Point Inc. of Amesbury and Newburyport has received a $365,000 contract for its Battered Women’s Program from the Department of Social Services. The contract runs through June 2008, and DSS has also made a 10-year commitment to Turning Point, ensuring that the organization will continue to provide services in the long-term. “This program is a model for providing a comprehensive response to domestic violence and I’m glad that DSS and Commissioner Harry Spence has recognized its importance to my district,” said Rep. Costello. “Former chairman of the board, George Cashman had asked for my assistance in this matter before he passed away, and I think this award will only add to his already significant legacy.” Turning Point was the first program in the state to accept women fleeing domestic violence who also faced a series of other circumstances including trauma, substance abuse and mental health illness. It remains one of three comprehensive domestic violence treatment programs in the state. To date, Turning Point has served over 300 women. “We’re excited and thrilled to continue to work with DSS and hopefully expand the program,” said Geraldine Dorr, President and CEO of Turning Point. “So much of our infrastructure now relies on women who have been treated and recovered. It’s a real affirmation of the work we do here.” |
