Transportation Improvements: Connecting Our Communities, Creating Opportunities

Our transportation network is a critical link that connects businesses to customers, employees to workplaces, and residents to recreational opportunities. Too often, this network is neglected and taken for granted. Mike has worked hard to reverse that trend by securing continuous investments in transportation improvements and infrastructure. The First Essex District will benefit from these projects for years to come.

The Clipper City Rail Trail: One of the state’s premier bike trails. The Clipper City Rail Trail has helped link Newburyport’s MBTA station with downtown businesses and the Newburyport waterfront. Residents and visitors, alike, can now use alternative modes of transportation which ultimately connects Newburyport to Boston via the MBTA’s commuter rail. The Clipper City Rail Trail will also connect to the Coastal Trail System for access to the entire First Essex District.

The Salisbury Eastern Marsh Trail

Newburyport Harbor Connector

Salisbury “Ghost Trail”: Mike helped secure a grant from the Massachusetts Highway Department to build the trail, which connects Salisbury to Amesbury.

Route 110: Route 110 is the gateway to downtown Amesbury and Salisbury Beach. New improvements there include streetscape improvements and new sidewalks, making it more attractive for pedestrians.

Gillis Bridge: With Mike’s support, the state has taken a proactive approach to the Gillis Bridge.

Plum Island Boardwalk: Providing public access to the waterfront has always been one of Mike’s top priorities. Mike secured $XXX to build the boardwalk at Plum Island Point.

Chain Bridge:

The Amesbury Transportation Center: The $8.6 million project, which will be located in Amesbury’s Lower Millyard, is expected to begin construction in late spring 2010. The project will create 125 construction jobs and house town facilities, including a Senior Center.

Seaport Mike has worked hard with Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray, chairman of the Seaport Advisory Council, to bring state money to support the First Essex waterfront. These include:

The Salisbury Pier.

The Newburyport Harborwalk Connector, which provides access to the Newburyport waterfront. The Harborwalk Connector will link to the Clipper City Rail Trail, connecting Newburyport from east to west, and from north to south.
